"The people of Niger need diplomacy that paves the way for restoration of democratic governance that sustains just peace," say The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) leaders, President Archbishop Dr Panti Filibus Musa and General Secretary Rev. Dr Anne Burghardt, in a statement issued today.

In July, the Niger military seized power, overthrowing democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum and installed General Abdourahmane Tchiani as head of state.”

This was a "shocking occurrence,” said LWF President Musa. "Niger has been one of the stable democracies in the Sahel region. We are very concerned over what this will mean for the whole region.”

Statement

"The people of Niger need diplomacy that paves the way for restoration of democratic governance that sustains just peace. We call on all concerned parties to work together and engage in dialogue for peace.

The people of Niger and the whole Sahel region of Africa need safety, stability, and security. We call on all external parties to refrain from sowing discord and unrest. Niger needs dialogue and diplomacy, not weapons and war.

Peace and stability must be ensured, and democracy restored, so that urgent challenges like climate change and food security can be addressed."
