Member Church Projects in Africa

Project name : Diakonia, the Life of the Church

Project holder : Malagasy Lutheran Church

Results :

The Vakinakaratra region of central Madagascar is home to a large number of small farmers. The LWF helped set up development committees in every local church of this area that run income generating activities to improve the livelihood of residents and help women and youth become models for the implementation of diaconal activities. The project has had a significant impact. New agricultural techniques, such as compost-making and fish farming have led to improved socio-economic condition, increased production, changes in consumption habits, lowered debt and better health. Small scale infrastructure, such as water pipes or pedestrian bridges have facilitated fraternity and friendship among neighbors.

Project name : Use your talents in diaconal ministries

Project holder : Malagasy Lutheran Church

Results :

Since political upheaval in 2009, the Malagasy people have endured financial crisis and experienced various social problems, amplified by natural disasters and the resurgence of forgotten diseases, such as the plague. The Malagasy Lutheran Church decided to raise awareness among deacons and other Christians of the need to put word into action and express their faith in their daily lives outside the church and in society, to face the crisis and alleviate the impact on the local population. With the support of the LWF, the Malagasy Lutheran Church carried out a campaign in each synod committee, pastor conference, catechist camp and bible school to promote its diaconal work. An association of deacons was created to coordinate the diaconal ministry of the Malagasy Lutheran Church at a national level.

Project name : HIV and AIDS Aids Action

Project holder : Lutheran Communion in South Africa

Results :

Southern Africa has the highest incidence of HIV and AIDS in the world. The Lutheran Communion in South Africa (LUCSA) is working to enhance the ability of its 15 churches to address the factors that fuel HIV and AIDS. Thanks to the increased capacity of ministries to address the effects and challenges of the pandemic, people living with HIV, and who face stigma, poverty and marginalisation, have better support to help them cope. With the support of the LWF, the LUCSA HIV and AIDS desk has made significant strides since launching the program to motivate and strengthen member churches to respond. To date, LUCSA has supported over 100 community projects. All LUCSA churches, which are located across the 10 countries of southern Africa, are implementing HIV and AIDS programs.

Project name : Clinical Pastoral Education

Project holder : Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania

Results :

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) provides health care services in many regions of the country, in particular, remote rural areas. Patients, particularly those affected by sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV and AIDS, often experience stigma, even from those who should take care of them. People are treated differently according to their social and economic status. These attitudes also affect the family. The ELCT and the LWF are training pastors, deacons and health professionals working in ELCT hospitals to provide pastoral and spiritual care, including palliative care, to patients and their families. The approach is holistic: to encompass physical, spiritual, emotional and mental wholeness. Health professionals are no longer considering themselves only as such but also as companions on the journey and to give a voice to their patients, spending time talking, counseling and listening to patients. Patients who endure physical, psychological, social and economic distress are now treated with dignity and have an opportunity to air their pains and joys.

Gender justice and equal participation of women, men and youth in the life of the church is one of the core values of the LWF communion. This project has enhanced the capacity of the church to raise awareness and offer education in order to exercise gender justice in their lives and ministries. Women in communities have become agents of change among other women, their families, as well as other vulnerable groups, such as orphans, the elderly and widows. As of 2017, the project had addressed the issue of child marriage and domestic violence. It had also established a helpline for people in need.
