Die erste Phase dieser Entdeckungsreise wurde mit einer Konsultation zum Thema „Wir glauben an den Heiligen Geist: Lutherische Identitäten aus weltweiter Perspektive“ eingeläutet, die im Oktober 2019 von der Äthiopischen Evangelischen Kirche Mekane Yesus (ÄEKMY) in Addis Abeba ausgerichtet wurde und an der Menschen aus allen Teilen der Kirchengemeinschaft teilgenommen haben.

In der zweiten Phase 2020/2021 wurden die theologischen Reflexionen zu den auf der Konsultation in Addis Abeba aufgeworfenen zentralen Fragen und Themen vertieft. Teil dieser Phase waren eine Reihe von monatlichen Webinaren zum Thema „Lutherisch sein“, an denen Menschen aus allen Weltregionen teilnahmen und sich gegenseitig von den Erkenntnissen und dem Verständnis aus ihren verschiedenen kulturellen Kontexten berichteten.

Die dritte Phase baut mithilfe einer Umfrage unter allen Mitgliedskirchen auf diesem globalen Austausch über die lutherischen Identitäten auf und will verstehen, wie Taufe, Glaubensüberzeugungen und Glaubenspraktiken beeinflussen, wie lutherische Gläubige ihren Glauben in den verschiedenen Lebenskontexten praktisch leben und Zeugnis dafür ablegen.
