Nepal

Country Program

The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) has been working in Nepal since 1984 with refugees, hosts, displaced (IDPs) and people at risk with socioeconomic, and climate and disaster vulnerabilities, including refugees. LWF Nepal has prioritized women and girls, persons with disabilities, lower castes such as Dalits, internally displaced people, youth, ex-bonded laborers, and marginalized indigenous communities as right holders.

Through developing community-based organizations, LWF in Nepal aims to ensure equitable access to livelihoods, quality services, and protection and social cohesion. LWF works closely with the government as the primary duty bearer as well as with the private sector and other development partners in achieving its objectives.

As Nepal is prone to natural disaster, LWF regularly provides humanitarian aid after earthquakes and floods. When a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck Nepal in 2015, LWF supported affected communities beyond the emergency phase with reconstruction and livelihood activities. LWF Nepal also responded to smaller-scale disasters like the earthquakes in Doti and Karnali districts, Western Nepal, that happened in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

We work to build up local capacity on disaster risk management through village and district level committees. We also distribute practical supplies like rubber boats and life jackets in flood-prone areas.

The LWF provides livelihood and relief support to Tibetan and Bhutanese refugees at two camps in Eastern Nepal.
