(LWI) - The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) is calling for donations to support its member churches in their response to the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
Many of the LWF’s 148 member churches live and work in contexts that are particularly vulnerable for emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic. They offer vibrant witness in those contexts, also through their diaconal work to the wider communities (e.g., through hospitals, health clinics, schools, and other social services).
“The coronavirus disease has a disproportionate effect on the vulnerable and on the churches that care for them. Our appeal for funding is to help them to continue the important work they are doing,” said Marina Doelker, LWF Program Executive for Diakonia and Development.
The Coronavirus has a disproportionate effect on the vulnerable, and on the churches that care for them.
Through their diaconal work, member churches are often the first responders to local and national emergencies, providing support, especially to those living in the most remote parts of the countries. Churches are also well familiar with the local realities and can often take direct action in an emergency before national or international aid arrives.
As infection rates and death tolls began to rise, churches have urged members of their congregations to stay safe by encouraging the use of soap, hand sanitizer, masks and non-contact thermometers.
“Because of the potential for psychological stress, the church also has the ability “to provide psychosocial support and counseling when it is most needed. The churches can connect and maintain congregational and community relationships during this time of challenge,” said Doelker.
The funds raised through this appeal will help churches:
The donations will only be used for specific COVID-19 prevention and response work implemented by our member churches on the ground.
