World Humanitarian Day 2020 - Online Press Kit

19 August is World Humanitarian Day

In memory of a terrorist attack which killed 11 aid workers on 19 August 2003, this day raises awareness about humanitarian work.

LWF through its humanitarian arm LWF World Service works as an implementing organization in 25 countries and three emergency operations in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Mandated by the LWF member churches, its 9,236 staff provide life-saving aid to refugees, internally displaced people, their hosts and people at risk.

The work of humanitarians worldwide is made increasingly difficult by shrinking humanitarian space, and challenges in safety and security for staff. This year, the global COVID-19 pandemic has made humanitarian work even more difficult. Our teams had to quickly shift the focus of their work, and deal with restrictions in movements and access to the people we serve.

On World Humanitarian Day, we celebrate the people who have dedicated their lives to helping others, and honor their commitment.

For Hope and a Future.
