Gender Justice in the context of climate change

The 66th session of the UN’s Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) will take place from 14 to 25 March, focusing on gender equality and empowerment of women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programs.

The LWF has been accredited to CSW since 1952 and has a delegation of over 60 people from different parts of the globe taking part in this year’s hybrid event. The Lutheran Office for World Community in New York will be coordinating the participation of delegates in the two weeks of meetings, negotiations and related activities.

Participants work closely with ecumenical colleagues and civil society partners to highlight the vital role of the churches in promoting women’s empowerment, combating violence and discrimination and achieving greater gender justice.

LWF’s vital advocacy work will be showcased at two parallel events on 15 and 21 March focused on ‘Women on the Frontline’ and ‘Youth-led Climate Justice Action’. Four other events, in cooperation with partners, will highlight faith actors addressing climate and conflict, the importance of climate finance and the central role of women and girls in climate change adaptation and mitigation.
