“Advocacy for justice is an essential, integral part of the mission of the church. It belongs inherently to the proclamation of the word. Justice under the law of God is a witness to the universal sovereignty of God’s law over all his creation.”
(Statement on “Socio-political Functions and Responsibilities of Lutheran Churches,” LWF Sixth Assembly, Dar es Salaam, 1977)
The LWF views engagement with the critical issues of social and economic justice and the promotion of human dignity as fundamental elements of a holistic Christian ministry and witness. Through its Office for International Affairs and Human Rights (OIAHR), the LWF seeks to strengthen, support and complement the ministries of its member churches in three major areas:
- International advocacy, including human rights advocacy at the United Nations
- Peacemaking and reconciliation
- Capacity-building
OIAHR issues an irregular e-mail bulletin on international affairs and human rights.
