The General Secretary conducts the business of the LWF and carries out the decisions of the Assembly and Council. The General Secretary is also the Chief Ecumenical Officer for the LWF.
He or she is assisted by the Cabinet, comprising department and unit heads appointed by the LWF Council.
The Council elects the General Secretary, who is appointed for a seven-year term. The person appointed is eligible for re-election.
Current General Secretary
The current General Secretary, Rev. Martin Junge, is the first Latin American to hold this office.
The former president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chile served as LWF Area Secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean in the Department for Mission and Development from 2000 until 2010.
He was a steward at the LWF Eighth Assembly and a delegate to the LWF Ninth Assembly.
