Women in Church and Society Desk

Who We Are » Secretariat » Department for Mission and Development

The Department for Mission and Development’s Desk for Women in Church and Society (WICAS), based in Geneva,  accompanies the member churches and the LWF Secretariat with two distinct approaches:

  • Practical: providing opportunities for leadership and addressing the varied needs of women
  • Strategic: promoting the formulation of gender-based policies and practices to make the LWF an inclusive communion that avails the gifts that women bring

Key Issues

The WICAS Desk is active in a number of thematic areas:

  • Gender – work towards an inclusive communion, encouraging member churches to honor LWF gender commitments
  • Ordination of women – advocacy for the ordination of women and accompaniment of member churches in their efforts to realize this policy
  • Violence against women – challenge to member churches to face violence against women in all forms particular to their specific contexts
  • Water – theological reflection on this crucial creation stewardship concern

Regional Coordinators

WICAS has a network of 12 regional coordinators elected in the LWF sub-regions by member church representatives to serve as voluntary workers on behalf of WICAS. This network connects member churches and is a powerful instrument and advocacy tool for the work of the WICAS Desk.
