The Geneva-based Asia area desk of the Department for Mission and Development (DMD) supports the holistic ministries of member churches with programs and projects that respond to particular concerns of church life in the region and specific priorities identified by the member churches.
Strengthening Regional Communion
The DMD Asia Desk assists churches to strengthen communion and collaboration in a region with great diversity of culture, languages and economics. The regional expression of communion is a vital instrument for accompanying both established churches and young churches in their mission and growth:
- North East Asian Lutheran Communion (NEALUC)
- West and South Asian Lutheran Communion (WeSALUC)
- South East Asian Lutheran Communion (SEALUC)
A regional office has been functioning in the region since 2000, and currently is located in Chennai, India.

Mission and Diakonia
The Asia Desk convenes a biennial church leadership consultation for discussion of challenges and issues in holistic mission, and for sharing practical experiences.
In 2005, an LWF consultation adopted a plan of action to address the challenges of diakonia in response to economic globalization, poverty, HIV and AIDS and other Asian social realities.
Current challenges in mission include:
- interfaith relationships in contexts where religion has significant impact on national and international politics
- the continuing tragedy of trafficking in women and children
The churches are challenged to raise awareness and to develop strategies to address these issues.
Governance and Leadership
The biennial church leadership consultations address issues such as styles of leadership and teamwork, transparency and accountability, and relevant sustainable structures. Participants include women and youth leaders as well as the heads of churches.
