Timely Delivery of Safe Water through LWF’s Cooperation with Local Communities
GENEVA, 21 March 2013 (LWI) – “Water Cooperation” is the theme for this year’s World Water Day, marked globally on 22 March.
For The Lutheran World Federation (LWF), World Water Day 2013 is an opportunity to highlight how decades of collaboration with local and international partners facilitate the timely delivery of safe drinking water to people caught up in conflict and weather-related disasters across the world.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia/GENEVA, 6 January 2011 (LWI) – The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY) marked 10 years of women’s ordination with a celebration and seminar reflecting on the long journey since Rev. Bekure Daba from the Western Synod became the first woman pastor in Africa’s second largest Lutheran church.
LWF 2003 Assembly Coordinator Dies
The former coordinator of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) Tenth Assembly, Rev. Arthur Leichnitz, passed away on 3 March at the age of 59 in Winnipeg, Canada, after a long illness. Leichnitz, whose most recent activity was that of adviser to the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY), had been entrusted in September 2001 with the task of planning the July 2003 LWF Assembly in Winnipeg from the LWF Secretariat in Geneva.
New NGO Bill in Ethiopia to Regulate Aid Agencies’ Operations
The Ethiopian Parliament endorsed a controversial bill on the work of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in the country. Passed on 6 January 2009, the new bill determines the legal ground for the establishment and operation of civic institutions as well as international and local NGOs.
According to the new law, local NGOs and civic institutions are now required to raise 90 percent of their income from domestic sources, failing which they would be denied citizens’ rights, and would thus be considered as international NGOs.
