Voices from the Communion | LWF Council
Bishop Dr Ndanganane Petrus Phaswana is South African. He comes from Johannesburg and lives in Soweto. For him, communion and unity are essential for the future of the international Lutheran communion. This is the message he will take home with him, he told Lutheran World Information (LWI) during the Council 2011 meeting in Geneva.
LWI | What is at the center of this Council meeting, in your view?
Phaswana | Adopting the strategic plan. It tells us where we are going in the coming years and how we can reach our goals. That is important because we are going to have to work together more closely in future. We have to support each other. The ideal instrument to achieve this is the strategic plan.
LWI | What message are you going to take home with you?
Phaswana | The message of unity. I will tell the people in my church that we share a vision. That is important precisely in South Africa, because we still have separate communities due to our political past. We were separated on grounds of our ethnic background under apartheid.
LWI | What is your vision for the future?
Phaswana | My vision for the future is that we grow together in the Lutheran communion, spiritually as well as in terms of numbers. It is very encouraging for me that our Lutheran church in South Africa is growing again and new churches are being built.
