“…an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you….” Matthew 2:13

As a child, Jesus was a refugee. Warned in a dream, Joseph took Jesus and Mary to Egypt to flee the threat of death. In this Christmas season, we pray for all who seek refuge, and for all whose hearts open to welcome them.

As a 12-year old, William Kurelek dreamed of the Christmas story set in Canada. Years later he painted them. One dream was the escape to Egypt imaged as Old Order Mennonites riding through a snowstorm.

After years of ecumenical dialogue, in 2010, Lutherans and Mennonites shared an act of repentance and reconciliation. Today Lutherans and Mennonites are working together in Dadaab caring for people who fled famine and violence.
