UN Human Rights Bodies

The OIAHR helps LWF member churches, field programs and partners make use of the following key UN human rights bodies to strengthen their witness for justice and human dignity.

Human Rights Council

The UN Human Rights Council is the leading international political forum on human rights. As a nongovernmental organization in consultative status with the UN, the LWF attends Human Rights Council sessions and makes written or oral statements.

Universal Periodic Review

The Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) evaluates how each UN member state is meeting its human rights obligations and commitments. The LWF participates in this process by submitting information on the human rights situation in the specific country under review.

Special Procedures

The Human Rights Council has over 30 monitoring, reporting and advising mechanisms called “Special Procedures,” which focus on thematic issues or specific country situations.

The LWF both submits directly and assists LWF partners to submit relevant information to any of the Special Procedures, and makes statements during corresponding sessions of the Human Rights Council.

Human Rights Treaty Bodies

There are seven UN human rights “treaty bodies,” or committees of independent experts, that examine implementation of the core international human rights treaties.

The LWF attends treaty body sessions and provides material for committee members to increase their understanding of the situation in a given country. The OIAHR works in particular to facilitate “alternative reports” from LWF member churches, field programs and partners.
