OIAHR - Internships and Short-Term Placements

Internships and Short-Term Placements

The Office for International Affairs and Human Rights offers several possibilities for internships and short-term placements.

Annual Human Rights Training Internship

Each year the OIAHR enables at least one member church representative to take part in an intensive human rights training course provided by the International Service for Human Rights in Geneva in conjunction with the annual session of the United Nations Commission for Human Rights (March-April). (Applicants may propose other short-term human rights training programs for consideration.)

Interns are expected to share the knowledge and skills they acquire in order to equip others in their churches and communities for human rights work.

Endorsement by an LWF member church is required. The annual deadline for applications is 30 November.

Interested persons should contact via e-mail Mr Ralston Deffenbaugh, Assistant General Secretary for International Affairs and Human Rights, or via fax no. +41/22-791 6630.

General Internships & Short-Term Placements

Internships and short-term placements are available at the OIAHR, for the purpose of assisting in the general work of the office. The minimum period for such internships and short-term placements is 3 months. Longer placements of 6-12 months are preferred.

One such position is available with a small stipend sufficient to cover accommodation costs and other living expenses in Geneva and travel subsidy attached. Applicants with the endorsement of one of the LWF member churches are preferred for this position.

Other positions are available on a volunteer basis (i.e. unpaid; applicants must be in a position to finance their own travel, accommodation and general living expenses for the duration of the intended stay), although support for local travel and meal costs may be provided. Office space, computer facilities, internet connection and other office facilities are provided by the LWF.

At least two positions in OIAHR are primarily focused on monitoring, reporting and facilitating LWF constituency participation in the UN human rights treaty bodies.

Enquiries regarding possible internships/short-term placements of these types may be made at any time of the year. Interested persons should contact via e-mail Mr Ralston Deffenbaugh, Assistant General Secretary for International Affairs and Human Rights, or via fax no. +41/22-791 6630.
