Advocacy is the process whereby efforts are made to influence those in power to use their power in a different way, and to change power structures and relationships. Advocacy takes place at many levels and in many contexts, from the grassroots, to national and regional efforts, to international and global forums.

With its Geneva location and in its role as a non-governmental organization in consultative relationship with the United Nations, the LWF secretariat is well placed to pursue advocacy priorities in UN forums on behalf of its constituency. Some of the LWF's most important international advocacy forums in Geneva include the UN human rights bodies, and those associated with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

By agreement with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the LWF is represented at the UN Headquarters in New York by the Lutheran Office for World Community.

The LWF is a member of the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance, which exists to help coordinate advocacy by churches and church-based organizations on the issues of (I) HIV/AIDS and (2) Global Trade.

In addition, the LWF frequently issues statements and public letters on international affairs and human rights matters, and produces relevant documentation resulting from study processes and seminars.
