Multilateral Relations

Relations with the World Council of Churches

About half the member churches of the LWF are also members of the World Council of Churches (WCC). The nature of the relationship between the LWF and WCC has been discussed for many years. In 1999 the LWF Council and WCC Central Committee both declared their commitment to pursue greater contact and cooperation between the two world bodies. A joint staff group is exploring the various aspects of this commitment.

Relations with Other Christian World Communions

Annual Meeting of the Conference of Secretaries of Christian World Communions, Hendersonville, USA, 2002

The work of furthering Christian unity takes place on all levels of church life. The different Christian world communions and church families play an important part in the building of fellowship among individual churches with similar confessional backgrounds and traditions. In addition, the ecumenically dedicated communions and families are in a position to engage in international doctrinal dialogues and conversations with each other. Such activities facilitate increased mutual understanding throughout the world and are important for establishing different forms of church fellowship.

Most Christian world communions have structures that require the active support and affirmation of their individual member churches in order to take ecumenical steps of a global nature.

The LWF maintains regular contacts with other church families through the Conference of Secretaries of Christian World Communions (CS/CWCs).
