Language Services
In a multilingual and multicultural communion like the LWF, facilitating communication between people from different backgrounds enhances their active participation in matters of common concern. Through its Language Services sub-unit, OCS provides and coordinates translation for the LWF departments and offices spanning the Federation's four working languages (by size of constituency: English, German, French and Spanish).
The sub-unit regularly deals with translations of LWF governing bodies' documents and materials for the different LWF Publications. Currently, translations related to the LWF Tenth Assembly in Winnipeg, Canada in 2003 make up a major part of its work. When translations cannot be done in-house, especially English/French and English/Spanish combinations, the services of freelance translators are sought.
For translations done both in-house or by freelancers, revision is crucial to ensure quality.
The sub-unit, to a large extent, relies on freelancers for interpretation services. In cooperation with the relevant departments and offices, interpretation is organized for conferences and meetings. Each year's Council meeting is a major event for the sub-unit.
