The LWF Council elects the General Secretary, who is appointed for a seven-year term. The person appointed is eligible for re-election.
The General Secretary conducts the business of the Federation assisted by a Cabinet, comprising department and unit heads appointed by the Council, and carries out the decisions of the Assembly and Council.
The current General Secretary, Rev. Dr
Ishmael Noko, elected in June 1994, is the first African
to hold this office. He joined the then LWF Department
of World Service in 1982, and was Director of the
Department of Church Cooperation, later called Department
for Mission and Development, from 1987 until 1994.

The General Secretary is also the Chief Ecumenical Officer for the LWF.
