The extended, ongoing armed conflict in northern Uganda has created an acute humanitarian crisis. An estimated 1.4 million people are internally displaced; many still live in crowded, degrading camps. Food security, water, sanitation and HIV and AIDS are tremendous challenges here and in drought-striken southwestern Uganda.
The DWS Uganda program began in 1981 in response to the needs of poor and marginalized communities in high-risk settings. The program focuses on emergency response, building the capacity of community organizations and promoting sustainable development.
Assistance to IDP Communities in Northern Uganda
DWS Uganda assists internally displaced people (IDPs) in the Kitgum, Katakwi, and Amuria districts. The program enables communities to prepare for and respond to emergency. At its core: food security, shelter, water and sanitation, HIV and AIDS awareness, malaria prevention, psychosocial support. Boreholes, water use committees, latrines, hygiene promoters, food and non-food relief, and training for HIV and AIDS community educators are some examples of DWS Uganda projects in the area.

DWS Uganda strives to reduce HIV transmission through community-based work in the districts of Rakai, Lyantonde and Sembabule. Projects provide awareness education, counseling and support to people living with AIDS and AIDS-affected families. Other activities include support for child-headed households, health education and immunization, and training on the rights of children, widows and people with AIDS.

An influx of displaced people and refugees in the Adjumani district has had a widespread impact on the environment. A DWS Uganda agro-forestry project aims to help local communities get back on their feet while ensuring environmental sustainability. The project focuses on schools, the sub-county, individuals and community groups, a tree nursery, and local capacity building. Community members receive seedlings and learn how to create woodlots, orchards, and vegetable gardens.
