Communication

Communication builds community.

Effective communication is a basic requirement for life in communion. The LWF Guiding Principles for Sustainable Development (Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader) include the communication dimension:

  • Communication builds community.
  • Sustainable development depends upon effective communication.
  • Communication strategies should make maximum use of traditional and existing forms of communication.

As part of the LWF communication strategy, DMD supports regional communication forums and networks in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America:

ALCINET – Africa Lutheran Communication and Information Network
ALN – Asia Lutheran News
KALME – Communication Committee of Lutheran Minority Churches in Europe
LUC – Lutherans United in Communication (Latin America)
LAC/ALC – Latin American & Caribbean Communication Agency

The common denominators among these networks are the promotion of cooperative efforts among member churches in carrying out their holistic mission, enhancing means and patterns of communication with the diverse LWF communion and strengthening the search for the visible unity of the Church.

Through the networks, DMD sponsors capacity building measures, such as regional and national seminars to help the members of the networks stay abreast with new technologies, in order to communicate effectively and to stimulate professionalism of Lutheran communicators in the regions.

Several DMD-sponsored projects in various member churches focus on media work, especially radio, but also print and electronic media. By mid-2006, 98% of the LWF member churches have access to E-mail.

On a small-scale, DMD provides grants for non-academic, short-term training linked to existing or new aspects of the communication work within the churches, in order to keep abreast with developments as new communication challenges arise in the global context.

DMD actively seeks funding to support LWF communication work.
