LWF General Secretary Underscores Link between Lutheran Tradition and Human Rights Principles

"Give Us This Day Our Human Rights" - Special LWI Edition

GENEVA, 8 December 2008 (LWI) - Anniversaries of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) are an opportune moment to renew commitment to the human dignity of all people, remarks Rev. Dr Ishmael Noko, general secretary of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) in the foreword of an LWF publication focusing on the UDHR's 60th anniversary and the Declaration's relevance for LWF's global work.

"Give Us This Day Our Human Rights" is the title of the special edition of Lutheran World Information (LWI No. 10/2008) published in anticipation of World Human Rights Day, observed on 10 December globally. Contributions to the LWF information bulletin also feature the close connection between the UDHR and Martin Luther's elaboration of the fourth petition of the Lord's Prayer, on daily bread. Both mirror the July 2010 LWF Eleventh Assembly theme, "Give Us Today Our Daily Bread."

In the 24-page publication, authors from different world regions, including countries in which the LWF is represented, offer perspectives on the right to food, education, legal protection and security, resettlement, sovereignty, and interreligious dialogue, among others.

The special LWI edition includes liturgical material that can adapted for use during the UDHR anniversary celebrations or for other Human Rights Day events. (226 words)
