Himalayan States Lutherans Join United Evangelical Lutheran Church in India

UELCI Membership Increases to Eleven Churches

Membership in the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in India (UELCI) has increased to eleven since the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Himalayan States (ELCITHS) joined the body of Lutheran churches in India. Rev. Augustine Jeyakumar, executive secretary of the LWF National Committee in India, describes the ELCITHS as a union of four churches - Assam, Bodo and Eastern Evangelical Lutheran Churches, and the Zomi Christian Church in the north eastern region of Assam and Manipur. Jeyakumar noted that Lutheran churches had existed in the Himalayan region for a long time and had “repeatedly applied for membership in the UELCI.” Rev. Godwin Nag is bishop of the ELCITHS. Nine of UELCI churches belong to the LWF. (125 words)
