It is now 60 years ago since the Lutheran World Federation was founded in Lund. It was the result of a long preparation process. The war was still a fresh memory. The need for healing and building up what had been destroyed, both cities and relations, was evident. The meeting was dominated by representatives from the European and North American churches.

A lot of things have changed since then. The perspective is broader. We live in a world where the local and the global are connected and intertwined with each other in new ways. The fellowship of Lutheran churches has grown. But still the three main focuses decided on in Lund 1947 are valid for the LWF: to strengthen the unity among the Lutheran churches, to be ecumenically committed together and, in common action, help those in need.

Although we are back where the LWF was founded, it is more important to look to the present and future challenges and possibilities, than to become nostalgic about the past.

It is an honor for the Church of Sweden and the diocese of Lund to host the Lutheran World Federation Council meeting 2007, and we say

Welcome to Lund!
