Highlights from Regional Meetings
Africa

Approximately 60 people participated in the regional meeting for Africa. Those in attendance expressed great appreciation for the LWF’s commitment to inclusive communion, specifically the inclusion of women, young people and indigenous people. They also noted the need to call attention to the new scramble for the exploitation of Africa’s resources by emerging competing powers and continued need for healing and reconciliation in the region.
Asia

Asian participants numbering around 70 people expressed deep appreciation for the effort to include Lutheran church leaders in 60th anniversary celebrations of the LWF. The issue of living in communion was also discussed extensively in light of the various natural disasters faced by the Asian churches and how churches in this region can support one another in meeting the needs such disasters create.
Europe

The opportunity for sharing experiences during the regional meeting pointed to the diversity of Europe. Challenges faced by the region were framed as creating a context for mission. Participants agreed that the diversity of the LWF communion helps the regional communion face their challenges - Europe needs the communion. The meeting was attended by approximately 70 people.
Latin America

Participants in the regional meeting for Latin America focused on the LWF renewal process and the importance of regional communio. They stressed the value of recognizing and strengthening regional expression in the life of the LWF. While representatives numbered around just 25 people, this issue will be the focus of a regional consultation in Chile in April.
North America

Highlights of the regional meeting for North America included conversation on the concept of diakonia and what that means for churches in this context, as well as how North American churches understand, appreciate and move forward in relationships of global partnership. Additionally, many of the approximately 40 participants expressed benefit of a growing understanding of the issues faced by others in the communion.
